Rug Obstacle Chronicles: Conquering NYC’s Curves and Columns
As we welcome 2025, the team at Carpet Time is excited to tackle new carpet and rug challenges and continue helping our clients in the year ahead.
In the world of New York City apartments, not all rooms are perfectly rectangular or have straight lines. From columns to angular walls, many high-rise apartments feature unique layouts that can make finding the right sized rug a challenge.
At Carpet Time, we specialize in custom-fit rugs tailored to meet the needs of every room, no matter the shape or size. Learn how no obstacle is too big when it comes to creating your perfect rug for your space!
Rug Obstacle #1: Column & Angular Wall
A common challenge in New York City apartments is dealing with columns or angled walls, which often result in non-traditional room shapes. In our Downtown Brooklyn project, our client’s living room room had both. A standard rectangular rug would not do the beautiful space justice and highlight the irregular shape of the room.
Creating a custom fit rug around the room’s angled wall and column was the perfect foundation for the furniture and the additional rug layered on top. Our client selected a neutral textured wool style by Fibreworks which was custom fabricated on-site by our skilled mechanics. Find wool carpets from Fibreworks and more at Carpet Time. Rug Obstacle #2: Column & Floor Outlet
No two installs are ever the same—including our Williamsburg Brooklyn install of a custom sized STG NuSilk™ rug. The client wished to have a custom cut rug around a column but wanted more hardwood floor exposed around the perimeter. This install also required a custom cut out for the floor outlet.
This stunning serene space is every blue lovers dream with a soft blue silk-soft rug, dark blue column, and waterfront views.
Rug Obstacle #3: Curved Walls
Curved walls can pose another challenge when choosing a rug for your home. But don’t worry, we can custom-cut rugs to fit around curved walls. Whether you choose a printed carpet, solid cut pile or textured berber, we offer a variety of fibers such as wool, sisal, nylon, and polypropylene to suit your style.
Our client selected Fabrica style Madrid for their custom cut rug—this elegant nylon rug works beautifully either wall-to-wall or as a rug.
Rug Obstacle #4: Wall Bump Outs
Some apartments feature wall bump-outs that can make rug sizing tricky. At Carpet Time, we work with you to determine how much of your hardwood floor you’d like to leave exposed, and then create a custom rug that fits your space perfectly.
No room is the same, so we ensure every rug is tailored to your specifications.
Re-Use Custom Rugs for a Sustainable Future
At Carpet Time, we love creating custom sized rugs that fit our clients’ homes. Our custom-cut rugs are designed to fit your unique space, but if you move or decide to refresh your space, we offer a rug repurposing service. We can cut and refabricate your rug to fit new dimensions, ensuring that you don’t waste materials and keep your quality rug out of landfills.
By choosing to shop small, you’re not only getting a one-of-a-kind rug that’s made just for your space—you’re also supporting the local community/economy and making an eco-conscious decision. Repurposing and reusing rugs is a great way to contribute to a more sustainable future. It’s a win-win for everyone!
Please note: This service is only available to clients who purchased their rugs from Carpet Time. We do not cut or refabricate rugs purchased from online retailers like Amazon or elsewhere.
